Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto has arrived in the United States ahead of talks with President Bill Clinton expected to focus on trade, security, and regional issues.
The two leaders were scheduled to meet for three hours Friday at the White House before jointly addressing an afternoon news conference.
White House officials said Thursday that Clinton would press for help in bringing North Korea to the table for peace talks.
White House spokesman Mike McCurry said Clinton would also gently press for action to curb the recent rise in Japan's trade surplus.
