Free-tailed bats are amazing little animals. They can eat between 3,000 & 5,000 insect pests nightly, including flying ants, flying termites, corn-borer moths and mosquitoes. They can fly as high as 10,000 feet and as fast as 90 mph. They live 15 to 20 years in the wild and have an intelligence level equivalent to that of dolphins.
Both adult and baby bats are often found grounded during the summer months. If you find a bat please remember to use gloves or a towel when rescuing him/her as the bat will be frightened and may bite in self-defense. (We are trained and vaccinated to handle bats so we sometimes use bare hands as it allows better tactile sensitivity and control.)
