Fountains started as water collecting features, but turned into works of art, over time. Fountains were used for collecting water for drinking, bathing, washing and as a place to perform rituals. First fountains were built during the Bronze Age on Crete and they served as sources of water instead of indoor plumbing and wells. Later on, during ancient Greece, fountains became more common and more complex in design. And as it is today, we cannot talk about fountains and not mention the city of Rome! Today Rome is the city with the most fountains in the world - around 2000, and the situation was similar in the Antiquity. Ever since Roman times, Rome was known as the queen of water. It had small, private, public and monumental fountains, simple and decorated with sculptures. Maybe the most interesting one was Meta sudans, located next to the Colosseum, with remains visible until 1936. The best places to see ancient Roman fountains are Pompeii and Herculaneum, as they have the best-preserved fountains from the Roman period. Some fountains were used to communicate with the dead and perform rituals with curse tablets. One of those fountains - the fountain of Anna Perenna was found in Rome. One Roman emperor - Hadrian, was known for his love of art and fountains, so his villa in Tivoli is a unique example of extravagant waterworks during the Roman time. But the biggest and the most elaborate fountains, besides the ones in Rome, were actually located in the Middle East, where Nymphaeums were extremely popular. Besides the history of fountains and how fountains changed through time, find out how they were used to talk to the dead.
