Instructor Mike Anderson teaches us about the Leadwood (Scientific name: Combretum imberbes) in this week's Flora Friday video.
As the name suggests, this tree has a dense and very hard wood, when dry the wood of a leadwood weighs 200kgs per cubic meter more than water, making it one of the only woods which will sink, if dropped into water.
This tree is part of the Combretaceae family, which has at least 250 species, however, the Combretum imberbe is by far the most impressive out of all the combretums; the magnificent leadwood is a medium to large, semi-deciduous tree, which grows up to 20 m in height. Combretum imberbe is the tallest of all the South African combretums.
