At the beginning of Romans, the apostle Paul systematically conveyed why humankind is in bad shape before a holy God: on our own, we cannot achieve right standing before Him. As Paul laid this bleak foundation in preparation for the great news that is Jesus, he anticipated objections to his case and supplied clarifying answers.
