Ear Tubes Overview
Summary:
Used to clear middle ear of fluid or pressure and to decrease ear infections
Usually a procedure performed in children, but also in adults on rare occasion
Recurrent ear infections
Chronic ear infections
Severe ear infections with complications
Chronic fluid behind the eardrum with muffled hearing
Under 5 minute procedure that can be done in the office in adults but requires sedation with gas in the OR in kids.
Tubes usually come out on their own in about 1.5 years. Can require a separate procedure to remove them in 2-3 years if they have not come out on their own. Small risk of persistent hole in eardrum that can be patched.
Adenoids can sometimes be a factor in why someone needs tubes.
