To prevent acute rheumatic fever recurrence, secondary prophylaxis with penicillin is required to stop Group A Streptococcal infections. This is most commonly given as an intramuscular (IM) injection called benzathine penicillin G (BPG) (also known as Bicillin, the pharmaceutical trade name of BPG in Australia). This video takes you through the IM injection sites and methods for administering BPG. The correct IM injection technique is important to ensure pain is minimised and drug absorption is maximised.
