The government has now agreed to open up a Statutory Inquiry, meaning that the Inquiry will be governed by the Inquiries Act 2005 and will have the power to compel witnesses (including the Prime Minister) to attend and answer questions under oath. This is fantastic progress, but the work is far from over. We now need to take our efforts even further to ensure that this Inquiry happens as soon as possible, and to ensure that our group and those we are representing in this Inquiry are involved as much as possible.
These are our next legal steps in our fight for justice.
It is important that as many bereaved families as possible have legal representation in the Covid Inquiry. There is strength in numbers, and the more people that are represented, the more pressure we can apply to the government to be have a say in who heads the Inquiry, who assists the head, when it will get underway and more.
