In this video, we're diving into a dark chapter of India's history—a time when being a Hindu came with unimaginable challenges. During Aurangzeb's reign, Hindus faced heavy taxes just to practice their faith, bans on celebrating festivals like Diwali, and the demolition of temples to make way for mosques. This was the harsh reality under Aurangzeb, one of the most notorious Mughal rulers. Today, we're uncovering why Kashmiri Pandits, in a Hindu-majority country, sought protection under a Sikh Guru. Let's explore the story of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji and his ultimate sacrifice for India's religious freedom.
Aurangzeb ruled India from 1658 to 1707, remembered as an oppressive time for non-Muslims. He introduced the 'Jizya' tax, forcing Hindus to pay to practice their faith. Temples were demolished, such as the historic Kesho Rai temple in Mathura, to transform India into an Islamic state. Aurangzeb also coerced Hindus into converting using bribery, threats, and violence. Kashmiri Pandits, respected spiritual leaders, were specifically targeted, as their conversion would encourage others to follow. Facing unbearable persecution, the Pandits prayed at the Amarnath cave and were guided to seek the help of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji.
In desperation, 500 Kashmiri Pandits, led by Pandit Kriparam, journeyed 450 km to Anandpur Sahib to ask Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji for help. Guru Ji, moved by their suffering, made a courageous decision that would shake the Mughal empire. Inspired by his son Gobind Rai, he chose to confront Aurangzeb, knowing it could mean death. He was arrested, tortured, and pressured to convert to Islam or show a miracle—a demand he refused. Guru Ji proclaimed, "A true prophet does not show miracles for cheap theatrics." His three disciples were also martyred for refusing to convert.
In November 1675, at Chandni Chowk in Delhi, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji laid down his life—not for his own religion, but for religious freedom for all. His execution sparked outrage but also inspired resistance among the people. Bhai Jaita risked his life to bring Guru Ji's severed head to Anandpur Sahib, while Lakhi Shah Vanjara burned his own house to perform Guru Ji's last rites and protect his body from desecration.
The video also covers the creation of Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib at the spot of Guru Ji's martyrdom and Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib, where his body was cremated. These monuments are symbols of sacrifice and resilience, reminding us of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji's incredible legacy.
Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji was a martyr for humanity, not only for Sikhs but for every Indian who cherishes the right to practice their faith freely.
