Like much of the anatomy in the pelvis, the blood supply is messy, complex and variable. Let's attempt to look at the arteries of the pelvis by following the internal iliac artery and its branches. If I try to reconstruct them with pipecleaners it might help or make it worse. Let's find out.
The internal iliac artery branches from the common iliac artery, moves into the pelvis and splits into anterior and posterior divisions. The anterior division is responsible for supplying blood to the viscera and gives off the superior vesical arteries, obturator artery, vaginal or inferior vesical artery, uterine artery in the female pelvis, middle rectal artery, inferior gluteal artery and internal pudendal artery. The internal pudendal artery has yet more branches, including the inferior rectal artery.
The posterior division sends branches posteriorly to the muscles of the posterior abdominal wall and back.
