Thalidomide was introduced as a sedative and medication for morning sickness without having been tested on pregnant women. It has 2 optical isomers, (very similar to each other, having identical structural and chemical formulas, but differing optically) and this caused lots consequences pf arguments in public

‘R’-thalidomide is an effective sedative, helping women with pregnancy nausea.

However its ‘S’ isomer caused many many complications in pregnant women, so many children were born with different defects or died. That’s why this drug caused lots of arguments
