Lol:
Set in the Kingdom of Lothric, a bell has rung to signal that the First Flame, responsible for prolonging the Age of Fire, is dying out. As has happened many times before, the coming of the Age of Dark produces the undead, cursed beings that rise up after death. The Age of Fire can be prolonged with the linking of the fires, a ritual in which great lords and heroes sacrifice their souls to kindle the First Flame. However, Prince Lothric has abandoned his duty and instead chooses to watch the flame die from afar.

The bell is the last hope for the Age of Fire, raising previous Lords of Cinder, heroes who have linked the flame across aeons to attempt to link the fire again. However, all but one Lord abandon their thrones rather than linking the fire again.

The Ashen One, an Undead who failed to become a Lord of Cinder called an Unkindled, rises and must return three other previous Lords of Cinder, as well as Prince Lothric, back to their thrones in the Firelink Shrine in order to link the flame. The Lords include the Abyss Watchers, a group of warriors sworn to protect the land from the abyss and linked by a single soul; Yhorm the Giant, who was once a conqueror of the very people for whom he then sacrificed his life, and Saint Aldrich of the Deep, who was forced to become a Lord of Cinder despite an enjoyment of consuming both men and gods.

Once the Ashen One succeeds in returning the Lords of Cinder and Lothric to their thrones, they travel to the ruins of the Kiln of the First Flame. There, they encounter the Soul of Cinder, an amalgamation of all the previous Lords of Cinder who had linked the flame in the past. Once the Soul of Cinder is defeated, four endings are made possible based on the player's actions during the game. The player can attempt to link the fire, summon the Fire Keeper to extinguish the flame and begin an age of Dark, or kill her. A fourth ending consists of the Ashen One taking the flame for their own and becoming the Dark Lord of Londor.

Lol2:
Ashes of Ariandel introduces a new character named Gael at a location in the base game, who is able to transport the Ashen One to the "Painted World of Ariandel", a castle-town set in a snowy mountainside. Here, the Ashen One meets Sister Friede, a female character that tells the player to leave in order to keep any remnants of the first flame away from her and Ariandel's inhabitants, so that the world will still go on despite its rot. Another character is then introduced, an unnamed painter woman who will paint the new world once the player shows her the scrap of painted canvas Gael gave them. The Ashen One is then met by Father Ariandel who fears the flame, Friede attempts to kill the Ashen One but is slain, Father Ariandel revives her with fire because she too is an Unkindled, and the pair simultaneously attack the Ashen One. After killing the both of them, Friede is revived once more as Blackflame Elfriede. After defeating Elfriede, the painter talks about how she will soon paint a new world, one that will make a new home for somebody else someday.

Fear not the dark, ashen one. Journey to the world’s end to search for the Ringed City and encounter new lands, new bosses, new enemies with new armor, magic and items. Experience the epic final chapter of a dark world that could only be created by the mind of Hidetaka Miyazaki. This new adventure has players chasing after the Slave Knight Gael to the literal end of the world as he searches for the Dark Soul of Humanity.

At the close of the Age of Fire, as the world ends and all lands converge upon themselves, a lone adventurer descends into the madness of the earth and uncovers the secrets of the past. As players make their way to the fabled Ringed City they will encounter ancient beasts, a new cast of characters teetering on the edge of insanity, new armor, weapons, magic, and at the bottom of it all, a long lost city filled with new horrors for players to overcome.
