Ottawa Police Chief Peter Sloly has resigned amid criticism he was too permissive toward trucker-led protesters demonstrating in the Canadian city's downtown.
It comes barely a week after revealing in an interview he had "absolutely" no intention of stepping down from the role.
Following a meeting with Mr Sloly on Tuesday, Ottawa police board chair Diane Deans said the city had reached a "mutually agreeable separation".
In a statement announcing his resignation, Mr Sloly said he had done "everything possible to keep this city safe and put an end to this unprecedented and unforeseeable crisis."
The exact reason behind his departure has not been made public.
