This is Bhasan Char, meaning "floating island" in Bengali. One third of its surface disappears underwater at high tide. It''s on this uninhabited, low-lying island that Bangladeshi authorities want to house some 100,000 Rohingya refugees. While aid groups are concerned about the people''s safety there, local residents do not hide their resentment at housing them near their homes. SOT Nearby island official Fakrul Islam Ponir "We want the authorities to keep in mind that the Rohingyas are drug smugglers, and that they may start criminal activities and create problems in our areas."The island only emerged from the bay in 2006 and is an hour''s boat ride from the nearest inhabited area. Despite warnings that it could be completely inundated, the government has pressed ahead with the 280 million dollar plan.... filling it with sand and erecting embankments as well as building shelters. The plan to send Rohingyas to a virtual prison is the latest example of maltreatment they''ve endured. Nearly 700,000 of them have fled Rakhine State in northern Brma, since the army''s brutal crackdown last August. SOT Rohingya woman"The military were shooting all around us and many people were injured. When they saw my father they shot directly at his head. It split open. We could''t get to him because the soldiers were around."Amnesty International''s latest human rights report calls the military campaign against the Rohingyas "a clear example of ethnic cleansing". While insisting that the ultimate responsibility lies with the army rulers, Amnesty also criticised Burma''s civilian leader Aung Sang Suu Ski for failing to play her role in ending the violence.
