Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema won the prestigious Ballon d’Or award for the first time in his career on Monday.
The French footballer, born to Algerian parents, is the first French player to win the trophy since Zinedine Zidane – also of Algerian descent – in 1998.
Benzema played a pivotal role in Real Madrid’s crowning of the Champions League and La Liga titles last season.
Benzema, 34, also became the oldest winner since the first recipient in 1956, England’s Stanley Matthews.
