Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) killed Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh in the early hours of the morning in Iran. Ismail Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend swearing-in ceremony of Iranian President-elect, Pezeshkian. Russia called the killing of Hamas Chief Ismail Haniyeh an ‘absolutely unacceptable political murder’. Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister also said the killing will also have a negative impact on ceasefire talks in Gaza. Russia, which has relationships with Arab countries, Iran and Hamas, has frequently condemned violence in the region. Russian President Putin accused the United States of ignoring the need for an independent Palestinian state. Hamas Chief Haniyeh was tough-talking face of Palestinian group's international diplomacy as war raged back in Gaza. He had a major hand in building up Hamas' fighting capacity, partly by nurturing ties with Shi'ite Muslim Iran.
