Nowadays, it’s commonplace to see NBA players appear in films, television series, and various other forms of mainstream media. Typically, they portray an exaggerated version of themselves, that either celebrates or derides their well documented public image and character traits. Or, alternatively, they play a fictional character, who is strikingly similar to themselves. These appearances are usually brief, and only exist for the sake of a few throwaway jokes. But, sometimes, the players in question get a substantial role in a production, complete with a storyline or running joke that’s totally unexpected, such as Charles Barkley's reoccurring appearances in the animated adaptation of the 1994 film ‘Clerks’.
