2 HO trains run on 1 track, using only ONE reed switch, automatically controlled an NCE DCC Mini-Panel. The “breakthrough” shown in this video, is that we can use just ONE reed switch, instead of the usual TWO reed switches (“stop” and “go”) traditionally used for two-train “automatic block” type of operation.
WHY AM I CALLING THIS ONE-REED-SWITCH SYSTEM A “BREAKTHROUGH: There are number of situations (modules, garden railway, running on somebody else’s layout) where you might be able to fairly easily hook up ONE reed switch, but getting a SECOND reed switch hooked up on the other side of the layout might be very difficult. So being able to do automatic operation using just ONE reed switch, may open up a lot of NEW possibilities for automatic control.
WHICH WAY IS BETTER: Two reed switches (as seen in Video #814 Part 1/3) is PREFERRED -- because two reed switches gives better control than using only 1 reed switch.
THE LOGIC WHEN USING 1 REED SWITCH: The logic is to have the 1st train stopped in the “parking area” about 12 feet (or more) “downstream” of the single reed switch. The 2nd train is started “upstream” of the reed switch. When the 2nd moving train passes over the reed switch (and the magnet on the front car momentarily closes the reed switch), the Mini-Panel (a) starts the 1st stopped train, (b) executes a 10-second (or more) delay command until the 2nd moving train reaches the “parking area”, then (c) sends a “Stop” command to stop the moving train. The process then repeats when the 1st train which is now out on the mainline passes over the reed switch.
ABOUT THE MINI-PANEL: The NCE “Mini-Panel” is a $49 off-the-shelf, approximately 3-1/2 inch-square component that plugs into the “control bus” (cab bus) of an NCE DCC system. It can be considered a simple “Programmable Controller for DCC Trains”.
Although this demonstration has been done in HO gauge using Kato track, this same “Mini-Panel” and its “programming” could readily be used for N, HO, S, O gauge, largescale, or any other DCC trains that adhere to the NMRA standards for DCC.
