Today’s video is about the silent E in English, which is very common.
When a word has a vowel-consonant-e (V-C-E) pattern at the end, the "e" at the end of the word is usually silent.
This silent "e" affects the pronunciation of the vowel before it, making it say its long sound.
Some examples of V-C-E words include:
• lake / leɪk/
• bike /baɪk/
• kite /kaɪt/
• time /taɪm/
• cute /kjuːt/
Notice how without the silent e, we would have completely different words, for example:
• Tim / time
• cut / cute
• kit/ kite
V-C-E rule is a helpful rule to understand the spelling and pronunciation of many words in English.
