What is the origin of Jaffna Tamils?
The Karaiyar is an indigenous Tamil-speaking fishing caste inhabiting both the coastal belt of the Jaffna peninsula in Sri Lanka and the Coromandel coast of Tamil Nadu in South India. They share a common ethnohistory and cultural relations over several centuries, yet exhibit distinctive features of local history and cultural identity in their own terms.

The Karaiyars were assigned the western section and the harbors of the Jaffna Kingdom. The Karaiyars formed the generals of the Jaffna kings and officered the navy of the Aryacakravarti dynasty.
