The title character switches around a line from a well known romantic comedy movie. When Wade is about to reunite with Vanessa after finally killing Francis, he announces “I’m just a boy, about to stand in front of a girl”. This happens to be a gender switch of the famous line “I’m just a girl, standing in front of a boy”. The line is spoken by Julia Roberts’ character to Hugh Grant’s character in 1999’s Notting Hill near the end of the movie.
