“I had the haircut, like the ‘Juice’ cut Tupac had in the movie,” says Juice WRLD, recalling the origins of his name. And the WRLD part? “I took it as trying to take over the world, and it being my world.” During a recent visit to MASS APPEAL HQ the Chicago rapper whose new album, 'Goodbye & Good Riddance,' channels the pain of bad relationships into emotionally fraught soundscapes, reflected on his diverse musical influences, from Wu Tang and Chief Keef to Black Sabbath and Fallout Boy. “In fifth grade I had a crush on this girl, and she was real life emo as fuck,” he recalls. “She said something about a group she liked.” He'd already heard of the band from his Tony Hawk video game, but he went home and studied up on them so he would have something to talk about with her about. “I ended up liking it, so that’s kinda how that started,” he says. So maybe all girls are not actually the same? “I’m currently in a happy relationship, healthy and all that," he admits. "But even if I make sad songs, I make ’em cause I know what it’s like to be in that low place. I’ve been heartbroken at the worst. So I make music kind of to guide people through that.“ Check out the latest episode of Open Space right now.
