Whether it is tailwaters, slow, deep cold midwinter pools or even the San Juan River itself - a selection of little black midge pattern are a must-have component of the fly box.
For the super-specialised midge water (such as the San Juan), you can go down through sizes 22, 24 and even 30. However, for most people used to the idea of "Euro nymphing" - going down to genuine size 18 and 20 flies can seem really small compared to flies you typically see YouTubers using for tight line nymphing tactics.
Don't worry, the fish (grayling and, if in season where you live, trout) can definitely see them - especially in the relatively clear, cold water you get in deep mid-winter when the ground is frozen.
Frozen ground tends to mean zero runoff - which means clear water. Plus, just like Mr. Creosote from Monty Python and the Meaning of life, a tiny "wafer-thin mint" of a fly can be all the fish can face eating (or, just as likely, their natural food is mostly in that small size-range).
This micro midge pattern (with simple variations in rib and bead color) has caught me literally thousands of fish - far too many to count - over the years.
Fish On kindly helped me re-stock on my old battered packets of materials that I've bought from them (so their stuff looks nice in the video). They have arranged great, airmail, shipping rates to the USA - to complement their domestic UK postal service.
You can get Fish On materials here (and they've kindly offered us some commission for orders to the USA): [ Ссылка ]
