Muslims throughout the world on Friday (10/1) began celebrating the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
About 3,000 Israeli police officers were stationed throughout east Jerusalem in expectation of the arrival of thousands of Palestinians to pray at the mosque on Temple Mount. Markets in East Jerusalem, Gaza and Hebron were crowded as Palestinians shopped for food in preparation for breaking their fasts after nightfall.
At the Tomb of the Patriarchs in the volatile West Bank city of Hebron, Muslim worshippers walked through metal detectors under the watchful eyes of Israeli troops.
In Bosnia, Islamic believers around the country also started their fasting. Muslims in Sarajevo, Tuzla and other cities and towns attended prayers in mosques.
