Dr. Mark Shankle, MAFES Agronomist at the MSU Pontotoc Ridge-Flatwoods Branch Experiment Station, provides a summary of his field research that is exploring how soybean varieties respond to potassium fertilizer recommendations.
Yield response of old (lower-yielding) and new (higher-yielding) soybean varieties to potassium fertility recommendations from four soil testing labs will be compared in both rainfed and irrigated environments to determine the economic benefit of adding fertilizer based on rates that are recommended for both a low and high expected yield. Results from this research should provide Mississippi soybean producers with information that can be used for selecting the proper potassium fertilizer rate based on the production potential of individual fields and varieties.
