(29 Jul 2021) A regional economic forum based in China has urged the international community to improve vaccine supplies to underdeveloped countries.
The Boao Forum of Asia released a report on the global usage of COVID-19 vaccines on Thursday.
The report mentioned "vaccine nationalism" and the politicization of the vaccine allocation.
The forum's Secretary General Li Baodong said vaccine nationalism has seriously affected the fair distribution of vaccines in the world and the international cooperation in fighting the pandemic.
Chief expert of the Chinese CDC Shao Yiming said a recent COVID-19 spike in Nanjing shows China is facing pressure from the virus entering the country from bordering nations.
The outbreak in eastern China's Jiangsu province is linked to a recent airport cluster of infections, local authorities said Tuesday.
Last week, 17 airport workers at the Nanjing Lukou International Airport tested positive.
Nanjing's center for disease control and prevention said the more contagious delta variant is spreading in the city.
"The global pandemic is still growing and our neighboring countries have become main infected areas," Shao said, "we are not farther away from the pandemic, but closer to it now."
China has administered more than 1.5 billion doses of vaccines. New cases have been found in 11 provinces.
Shao suggested special measures be taken on the high risk groups of people, especially those working at entry ports.
