The attacker, who was known to employees, stormed the branch in the Byker area of Newcastle this morning. He held more than five people at knife-point before police negotiated their release after a tense stand-off. Armed officers swooped in on the area within minutes, with roads closed and members of the public ordered to stay away for their own safety. Two army bomb disposal units were called to the scene after witnesses claimed the man was threatening people with a ‘bomb vest’. It is believed he is the only person still inside the building.
