More than 100 people are feared dead, with at least 62 confirmed to have perished after a wooden boat carrying migrants to Europe crashed in rough waters on Sunday near southern Italy.
The vessel set sail from Turkey, carrying passengers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Somalia, among other countries. On Monday, at least three more bodies were recovered — bringing the death toll to 62, including at least 14 children as the search for more survivors or bodies continues.
Some of the survivors were brought to the Pallamilone sports hall in Crotone to identify the bodies of their loved ones, with letters, stuffed animals and flowers placed on the metal railings outside to show their respect.
Local authorities said at least 80 people have survived the disaster, but between 180 to 200 people were believed to have boarded the vessel when it left Turkey, suggesting more passengers may have died or are missing.
