Born in Dublin in 1831, William Manley served in the British army as a surgeon.
He was involved in the campaigns in the Crimean War (Siege of sevastopol), New Zealans (battle of Gate Pa), Egypt (Tel el Kebir) and the Second Anglo Afghan War.
Having received the Victoria Cross at the battle of Gate Pa (New Zealand), he then volunteered to provide medical assistance during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), where he was awarded the Iron Cross.
He retired to heltenham, Gloucestershire, where he died in 1901.
To this day, he is the only man to have been awarded both Britian and Germany's highest medals for valour.

My name is Chris Green and I love to share stories from British history. Not just because they are interesting but because, good or bad, they have shaped the world we live in today.
History should not be stuffy or a long list of dates or kings & queens.
So rather than lectures or Youtube animations, I tell stories that bring the past to life.
My aim is to be chat as if I were having a coffee or meal with you. Jean in Maryland, USA recently wrote: "Chris, is the history teacher I wish I had at school!"
Just for the record, I do have a history degree in Medieval & Modern history from the University of Birmingham.
