Taken at pacific steel, where my company does work periodically. Pacific Steel is Foundry located in Berkeley, California and casts large steel parts for things such as oil rigs and cranes. In the video, I filmed where they make the steel and at this point they are pouring the molten steel out of the crucible. As they move the container they just poured the steel into, you can steel in the background a bunch of steel boxes. These boxes contain the molds for the steel parts and are made with sand mixed with a binder which is then compressed over a steel mold. Also at this point you can see them pour a little steel out into a container they call a "pig". What they are doing is removing the steel slag (oxidized iron and junk which is lighter than the molten steel) and pour a little bit out before taking it to the molds. On average, 15 percent of the steel is lost to slag, evaporation in the furnace and residual left on the containers. This is then again recycled back into production.
