From 10:30 am on May 1, 2019,
sacred treasures (regalia) inheritance Ceremony is held until 10:40 a.m.
This ceremony is called Kenji-tou-Shoukei-no-Gi

This is the first stage of Crown Prince Naruhito’s accession to the throne. Chamberlains put the seals, sword and

magatama (sacred comma-shaped beads) on desks in front of the new Emperor as proof of his rightful succession


Shortly afterward, Sokui-go-Choken-no-gi (そくいご　ちょうけんのぎ） (11:10-11:20 a.m.) is held.

This is a ceremony where the new Emperor officially meets the representatives of the people for the first time since

taking the throne.

Emperor Naruhito gives his first speech as emperor during this ceremony, which is also attended by Empress Masako and

other members of the imperial family.
The participants include not only central government officials, but also those at the prefectural and
municipal levels. In the speech, he would give hints about his goals or hopes for his reign.

After Emperor Naruhito, prime minister Abe speaks as the representative of the Japanese people.


On May 4, 2019, Emperor and Empress greet well-wishes at the Palace.

Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako make their first public appearance, greeting well-wishers gathered at the Imperial

Palace. They appear six times during the day from 10 a.m. (0100 GMT)

A large turnout is expected as the public event takes place during a 10-day Golden Week holiday.
