Sophie Paczesny, M.D., Ph.D., a professor at the Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina, provides some an introductory definition of biomarker as part of a longer discussion about how biomarkers could aid in the diagnosis and treatment of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD). Paczesny was the corresponding author of a review article about GvHD biomarkers published in Transplantation and Cellular Therapy last month. Biomarkers, she explains, must be objective and can involve imaging tests as well as testing of blood samples.
