During a recent visit to Moray in NE Scotland I paid a visit to RAF Lossiemouth, the station currently plays host to 4 Typhoon FGR4 squadrons (1,2.6 and 9 sqn), alongside the RAFs 9 maritime patrol aircraft the Boeing Poseidon (P8)[120 and 201 sqn]. On the day the weather was cold but dry with even a little bit of sunshine.
Arrivals and departures were fairly regular throughout the course of the day and due to wind conditions this meant that runway 05 was in use, this provided a nice opportunity to catch the Typhoons going over the top of me when on final approach. It is an awesome spectacle and the noise from the Typhoon is truly something else.
The Typhoon is a highly agile and capable multi role combat aircraft and is utilised in all aspects of RAF air operations.
The Typhoon aircraft are currently based at 2 locations in the UK, RAF Lossiemouth (Moray,Scotland) and RAF Coningsby (Lincolnshire, England) and form the backbone of UK airspace defense including Quick Reaction Alert (QRA). Meaning aircraft are ready to scramble at moments notice to protect UK airspace and interests.
