If you are bumped from a flight due to overbooking, you are entitled to compensation from the airline. The amount of compensation you are entitled to depends on the length of the delay caused by the bumping. According to the US Department of Transportation (DOT), if the delay is less than one hour, the airline is not required to provide compensation. If the delay is between one and two hours, the airline must pay you twice the price of your one-way ticket (airlines can limit this $775 but always ask for more). If the delay is more than two hours and you choose not to travel, the airline must refund the full cost of your ticket. If the delay is more than two hours and you do choose to travel, the airline must pay you four times the price of your one-way ticket, up to a maximum of $1,550. If you believe you are entitled to compensation and the airline is not providing it, you can file a complaint with the DOT.
