This is the last part of an interview conversation that I had with Mel Y. Chen, a queer and trans Asian American disabilty justice and gender studies professor at UC Berkeley. Mel and I co-facilitated a mentorship workshop titled “How to Not Have Your Shit Together: A Sloth-Professoring Workshop on Failure in the Academy'' with Mimi Khúc and Mana Hayakawa at the 2022 Association for Asian American Studies Conference in April. Our conversation took place on the last day of the conference, in the hotel lobby, so you’ll hear some background noise because of that. In this video, Mel and I talk about our experiences with burnout, navigating responsibilities in academia, and seeking out spaces that are regenerative even if they require work.
