Pirate attacks worldwide more than doubled in the first half of 2009 amid a surge of raids by Somali pirates on vessels in the Gulf of Aden and the east coast of Somali. Indian sailors on wooden boats are easy prey for the bandits who then use their dhows to attacks bigger ships. The sailors have returned home for the monsoon period but many are fearful about returning to sea. But with no jobs in the Gujarat area, they have little choice.
