Wood burning fireplaces are old and dirty and never come with an instruction manual. It can be hard to know where to start. A few key terms can help you educate yourself with more googling or find what you need at the hardware store.
A lot of folks adore a nice wood burning fire in the winter, so knowing how to safely operate your fireplace and the gas log lighter is important. Always open the damper before a fire and never leave the gas valve open for more than 5 seconds without it lighting. Close the valve and start over after 30 seconds or so if you can’t get it lit right away. Once the logs are lit, be sure to close the valve.
If you’re more interested in the gas log insert I mentioned (with or without a remote control start), start shopping online or at a fireplace store to get an idea of what you want. Gas logs can start at $200 and go up over $2000 for larger fireplaces.
If none of that interests you, you can always go with a few decorative plants in the hearth!
