Populism is fast becoming the political buzzwords of the early 21st century, but what exactly is "populism" and why should we be concerned about it? In short, populism is a potent political phenomenon that can be both a corrective and threat for democracy. Political responses to populism should be based on an accurate understanding of populism, and its relationship to liberal democracy, so that they will strengthen rather than further weaken liberal democracy.
Cas Mudde is an associate professor at the University of Georgia and researcher at the Center for Research on Extremism (C-REX) at the University of Oslo. Mudde's book Populist Radical Right Parties in Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2007) won the Stein Rokkan Prize for Comparative Social Science Research in 2008. His most books are On Extremism and Democracy in Europe (2016) and The Contemporary Radical Right: A Reader (2016).
