In news that might come as some relief amid the rising number of COVID cases and deaths in India, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said on Wednesday that Covaxin, the made in India COVID-19 vaccines have been found to be effective against multiple variants including the double mutant variant of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID).
According to a study conducted by ICMR, Covaxin has neutralised the UK and Brazil variants of SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes Covid-19.
Bharat Biotech's Covaxin has received Emergency Use Authorizations (EUAs) for COVID-19 treatment in India and in several countries across the world.
ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV) has successfully isolated and cultured multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2 virus: B.1.1.7 (the UK variant), B.1.1.28 (Brazil variant) and B.1.351 (South Africa variant).
ICMR-NIV recently has been successful in isolating and culturing the double mutant strain B.1.617 SARS-CoV-2 identified in certain regions of India and several other countries, the ICMR said.
Bharat Biotech is producing 2 crore doses of Covaxin in April. They plan to produce 3 crore doses in May. By August two more production facilities would be functional in Bengaluru. The company plans to produce up to 80 crore doses every year, Dr Krishna Ella, Chairman and Managing Director, Bharat Biotech International Ltd said in media interviews.
