"The kind of patients is very similar to those we had in the first wave, but the average age is lower. We can say that the virus spread especially among family members and younger people got infected. The average age is around 60 years, between 50 and 60."

STORYLINE:
Italy is seeing an average of 10,000 new COVID-19 cases every day and intensive care units are filling up, according to officials.
"The number of hospitalized people is growing and our structure is almost saturated," said Antonio Marchese, director of the Casalpalocco COVID 3 Rome hospital.
"There are still approximately ten beds available in the intensive care unit, that you can see behind us. The rest of the beds of the hospital are already full," he added.
Marchese said the average age of patients needing treatment has been decreasing and more and more people between 50 and 60 years old are being affected.
As of Tuesday, 89 people died and 10,974 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Italy.
The worst hit regions are Lombardy and Piedmont in the north and Lazio and Campania in the center and south.
Several Italian regions have imposed tougher new restrictions such as night curfews in Milan and Naples.
