The goal of the charity ‘Named in My Backyard’, also known as IMBY, is to provide affordable housing by collaborating with homeowners and building tiny homes in their backyards. Today, the organization held an open house for its second tiny home build.
Members of the community stopped by the backyard of a house on Province Street in East Hamilton to see a new additional dwelling unit (ADU) built by IMBY. Co-founder Alicia Wilson says this is the first two-story home they’ve built.
With Christmas just a few days away, homeowners Stephanie and Tom say they are grateful to hand over the keys to this new tiny home to a single mother and her daughter, who came to Canada as refugees.
The completion of this almost 800-square-foot home with modern amenities comes after the city council turned down a motion last month to reevaluate two-story ADUs.
Co-founder Siobhan Koch says this innovative approach helps tackle the housing crisis in Hamilton and builds community.
As for what’s next, Wilson says they are looking for more homeowners to collaborate with.
The organization also says they are always looking for tradespeople to help with these builds. If you are interested in volunteering, you can check out their website, IMBY Homes, for more information.
