Today we present Sri Kamalambike, a Kriti composed by Muthuswami Dikshitar in Ghanta ragam and Adi talam. It is a tradition to sing this Kriti—a part of Muthuswami Dikshitar's epic Kamalamba Navavarana Kritis—on the 8th day of Navaratri.
In this Kriti, Dikshitar describes Goddess Kamalambika as one who protects the universe, and who relieves all living beings from misery. What then follows in the Kriti is a very visual description of objects the Goddess holds in her four hands: a sugarcane bow that symbolises the mind; 5 arrows that represent 5 elements of the universe (earth, water, fire, air, and space); a noose which is a symbol of worldly attachment; and a goad, which symbolises hatred.
Watch a charming presentation of this Kriti by Shakuntala Murthy, educator, musician, composer, performing artist based in Bengaluru.
Stay immersed—watch one Navavarna Kriti, each day of Navaratri, presented by rising artists of Carnatic music.
