Four Caribbean flamingo chicks are stretching their legs at the Columbus Zoo. Each chick is named after a cartoon character from the popular show, The Simpsons. On May 26, Sideshow Bob, Milhouse and Krusty hatched, and then on May 29, Nelson emerged. The only known sex of the four chicks is that Krusty is female; the others' have yet to be determined. When the weather cooperates, visitors can see the chicks venture out to the flamingo habitat.
Not only are the chicks smaller than the adult flamingos, they also have straight beaks and white downy feathers. The chicks will begin to fledge at around 2-months-old and their beaks will turn downward, then their white downy plumage will give way to feathers with a pink hue.
