If you have been considering mental health therapy and are looking for the right therapist for you, here are 5 tips to find the right mental health therapist.
1) The most important element of therapy is the therapeutic relationship, how you feel with your therapist. True progress in therapy treatment is based on the therapeutic relationship.
2) Experience matters - to a point.
Once again it's all about the therapeutic relationship and how you feel with your therapist. Experience matters related to your therapist's specialty and your specific needs. Talk to your therapist about what brings you in for therapy and how they can help with your specific needs.
When looking for the right fit, ask for a free phone consultation to feel out your therapist and see if they will be the right fit and have the speciality to help address your needs.
3) Know the difference between licensures and find the right provider to fit your needs.
Therapist; MFT's, MSW's, and LPCC's provide therapy. (Therapist licensure and titles may differ between states and location.)
Licensed Psychologist can provide psychological testing.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors that can provide medication treatment.
4) Ask about the therapeutic modality your therapist uses and how it can help you.
There are many therapeutic modalities, knowing the differences between them and how they can help with your specific needs can help to find the right therapist for you.
5) Ask about availability and services offered.
Finding the right therapist may take some time and you may see a few therapist before finding the right one and that is completely okay.
