The annual ‘Giants of Steam’ gala at The Bluebell Railway this year, taking place from 11th-13th October, would see a variety of steam traction in use, featuring star guest, LNER A4 Pacific No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley.
The gala would feature an intensive timetable with five steam locomotives in action. Alongside the A4, the railway would utilise the home fleet to create a star line-up, featuring Standard 5MT No. 73082 Camelot, Hall Class No. 6989 Wightwick Hall (on long term hire to the line from Buckinghamshire Railway Centre), Battle of Britain Class No. 34059 Sir Archibald Sinclair, and the railway’s latest addition, LBSCR Marsh Atlantic No. 32424 Beachy Head. This would be the latter’s debut at a Giants gala since its completion earlier this year, and was also the first for 34059 following her return to steam last year. A highlight would also include the first double headers for Beachy Head to take part in, the very first being with 73082, before making an iconic appearance running with the A4. ‘Archie’ would also have the pleasure of double heading with the A4, with the pair running two runs, one with each loco leading on the Sunday, making for a powerful combination.
With a locomotive line-up like this, it made for a fantastic weekend on the lineside capturing the large locomotives putting on a show along the line, with the majestic A4 being a massive crowd drawer throughout the event.
