An engine needs both gas and spark to start and run. If a bad fuel pump is suspected, starter fluid can be used to see if the engine will start. It will only run for 1-3 seconds, but if it started when it was not starting before, then there is a fuel-related issue which often means the fuel pump is bad. Be sure to check fuel pump relays and fuses before replacing it.
