Tens of thousands of workers across Germany on Wednesday (1/5) demonstrated against the government's proposed overhaul of the welfare state. The workers marched behind union banners in traditional workers' May Day parades. In eastern Berlin violence broke out during a demonstration of some 9,000 leftists who threw stones and bottles at police. In the violent exchange police in riot gear attempted to clear the streets using water cannon, tear gas and baton charges.
