In this episode of Synth Fundamentals, we tackle every synthesist's favorite sound: the pleasant chorusing of pulse width modulation.
We begin with a discussion of pulse waves and duty cycles, but quickly discover an equivalence with massive implications for PWM. Since a pulse wave can be created as the sum of saw & ramp waves, pulse width modulation is essentially an auditory illusion: two oscillator detune in a single oscillator.
Finally, we discuss what this means for your tuning and the musical consistency of your PWM patches.
