I have had a lot of long writing sessions over the past few months with my Pilot Vanishing Point fountain Pen. And with those long writing sessions came a lot of refilling that CON-40 converter! I was refilling this pen up to five times a day for weeks! I've learned a trick or two in getting the most out of this converter with a "full-fill" method. (Gouletpens.com has a helpful video showing the "full-fill" method I will link below.) In this video I focus on a few helpful tips for getting that CON-40 fully filled. This method can be used with other converter fill fountain pens as well!
One quirk that I have run into in the last few weeks is that the Noodler's "Texas Black Bat" fountain pen ink hangs up when I try and pull the ink down into the converter! It is a drier ink than what I am used too, but it is a really amazing black ink! It is the best behaved black ink I have tried on Moleskine paper. The "anti-feather" attribute shows up well! I haven't tested the "waterproof" aspect yet, but now that is on my mind... (Testing will probably come in the future!) To be able to use this ink and fully fill in my Vanishing Point, I actually have to pull the converter out and expel the air pockets from the converter. This gave me a lot of insight into what is going on with the pen as it's filling.
(It's worth noting that I have used this converter A LOT and so it could possible be on the worn side.)
When I am twisting the plunger back up to release the air from the converter (to make room for more ink) I watch the bubbles closely and wait for actual ink to show. Then I know all of the air is gone, and I will get that full fill. If I go ahead and finish filling before the air has been released then the converter will not be able to fill with as much ink, and I lose out on a full fill.
Getting that extra ink in the converter makes ALL of the difference with my writing sessions! I would note that having the extra ink in the converter seems to create a fatter writing line for awhile. (maybe that's why the converter is that smaller size for optimal consistency.) It doesn't bother me, but it is worth noting.
Thanks so much for watching!
