In this episode of Plan B: Back to Africa, I reflect on my recent visit to South Africa and share how it has shaped my perspective on Ethiopia. Both countries share a federal governance structure, but the way these systems function within their unique historical and cultural contexts reveals important differences—and opportunities for growth.
I dive into South Africa’s reaction to Orania, a self-sufficient, racially segregated community operating under the country’s constitutional and legal framework. While many South Africans strongly oppose the ideology behind Orania, they respect its right to exist because it aligns with the rule of law. This response of tolerance and legal respect offers valuable lessons for Ethiopia.
Ethiopia’s diverse federal system often struggles with deep-seated divisions and mutual mistrust between its regions and ethnic groups. Drawing on South Africa’s example, I discuss how Ethiopians can foster greater respect for legal processes and constitutional rights, even when there are sharp disagreements.
This episode is an invitation to explore what Ethiopia can learn from South Africa’s journey—particularly the balance between unity and diversity—and how embracing tolerance and constitutionalism could strengthen Ethiopia’s future. Don’t miss this thought-provoking discussion!
